PLEASE NOTE that although we love hearing from people
from any part of the world, we are based in the north of England in the United
Kingdom, and our customers are mostly in Britain or other parts of Europe: if you
want to buy rushes or cane and you live in, for example, the USA, there is almost
certain to be a supplier a bit nearer to you, so carriage costs will be a lot less. Do email if
you
wish, however, as we
always enjoy chatting about seat weaving.

N.B., Please note that most items will be delivered to you within a week
- sometimes sooner. Occasionally our wholesalers are out of stock, though, and if we've had
to order something in for you there may be a delay, up to 28 days. Once we realise there
will
be a delay, we will let you know at once. This is one reason we require
your phone number and your email address. (We NEVER pass on your details to

VISITORS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY PLEASE
While we're happy to meet our customers, please note that we do not
have a retail shop. If you contact us first, either by
email or by phoning 01900 813200, we
can arrange to have ready whichever materials you may be interested in. But please don't
turn up unexpectedly! Sometimes we're very busy; sometimes we're taking the dogs for a
walk. Whatever we're doing, if we don't know you're coming we won't be able to give you
the attention you deserve, so
do please let us know first that you'd like to come.

RUSHES
Unfortunately we are having difficulty at the moment getting supplies of fresh rushes. We
are hoping to find a new supplier soon, so do check back soon. In the meantime, why not
try Reel Rush - below?

'REEL RUSH'
|
'Reel Rush' is genuine rush, ready twisted on a reel. It saves a lot of time when
seating rush chairs, and being easier to use than traditional rush it's ideal for
beginners, as well as those in a hurry. One reel is enough for about 4 chairs; however, it
now often arrives in single kilo rolls. You'd need about 1½ kilos per average chair in
this case.
Reel Rush does need soaking, but not for very long. 20 minutes or less is usually
enough - if you leave it too long, it will start to untwist.

No.0 cane is extremely fine, and usually used only for decorative panels. It's
unsuitable for
seats as it's not strong enough.

CANE CHAIR KITS
These popular kits contain enough materials to reseat an average sized
cane chair.
Sadly we've had to increase the price of these kits slightly because of the new postage
rates brought in by Royal Mail for irregularly-sized small packets. They're still great value for
money, though, especially if you order a kit with instruction book included! Do note, though,
that if you're planning to do several chairs it's probably cheaper to buy the cane by the roll.

Cane chair kit contents include:

* 1 strip of 4mm centre cane for pegging
* 1 strip of No.6 cane for beading
Sizes of cane required depend upon the spacing (centre to centre) of the little holes
around the
edges of the seat.
If the spacing is more than ½inch, you'll need No.3 and No.4
cane.

NATURAL TWISTED SEAGRASS - Genuine superior quality Chinese
seagrass |

Only natural colour available.
|
Allow about 1 kilo per average seat.
We can now get 2 thicknesses of seagrass, standard and extra thick.
Extra thick is great if you want to do a seat really quickly - it produces a nice chunky finish
which works well on rustic-looking furniture. If you're doing the chequerboard pattern, and
normally use stretcher sticks on the warp strands, please note you'll need much thicker
stretchers with this heavier seagrass. The ones I've been using are about 2 inches thick.

READY MADE RATTAN CANE WEBBING
This material is ideal not only for replacing the seats on Bauhaus type chairs, but
also for a variety of DIY projects such as covering bedheads, tables, radiator covers,
screens and many other things.
Ready woven webbing can also be used for canoe seats, though we would recommend
hand-caning these, for strength.

CESCA CHAIR KITS
|
Many people have these chairs, a design classic from early last century.
Gradually the caning wears out. These kits contain everything you need to
remake the seat - a piece of ready-woven cane webbing, a strip of beading
cane to go round the edges, and an instruction leaflet.

N.B. Natural/brown comes on 7kg rolls; the other three colours come on 5kg rolls.
Natural can also usually be ordered by the single kilo, and sometimes other colours
if we have them in stock - do ask.

This is made from twisted kraft paper. It looks very like the real thing on a finished
seat, and is much easier to use, especially for beginners. Available in a variety of colours.
Natural is useful as you can alter its appearance to look either like antique rush or
fresh rush by applying a little diluted woodstain in an appropriate colour.
Brown/natural already looks like old rush, and green/natural is more like
fresh rush.

COTTON SEATING CORD |

We now have a supply of larger reels of cotton cord, in natural colour. The new reels
weigh about 1kg and are enough for 2 average sized seats. It's the same, lovely soft
material as before. It's really easy to work with and strong and hardwearing. It's about
the same thickness as seagrass but much gentler on the hands.
The new cord is CHEAPER than the old stuff, which would have cost over
£20 for the same amount.

NYLON POLYCORD

You may want a seagrass needle to work with polycord. See the tools section.

Polycord hasn't been available for some time, but we can now get it again. It's incredibly
tough and hardwearing, non-stretchy, stain-resistant and very easy to use. It comes in 5
colours - dark brown, straw, white, red and green. This material is ideal for occupational
therapy, disabled groups, schools and so on, though being water-resisant it's also perfect for
any seats that may be left out of doors for extended periods, such as patio furniture or canoe
seats.

Natural raffia comes in bundles of approx. 1 kilogram. It is untreated and an incredibly
versatile material for all sorts of craft projects. All types of raffia including small skeins of
coloured raffia and Rialto-Bast can be obtained for you on special order. We don't keep it in
stock here, but DO ASK!

ROTACANE & DUNLICANE
|
|
|
Rotacane, the ready-to-use, plastic basketry cane so popular with those who run
occupational therapy groups for blind or disabled people as well as fund-raisers and others,
is hard to find. From time to time we manage
to get our hands on a few rolls, which are usually snapped up quite quickly.
It comes in 2 standard colours - buff and cream, and 3 sizes - large staking, staking
and weaving. We also occasionally come across other colours, such as yellow or green.
It works brilliantly with our plywood basket bases and the melamine tray bases,
and is particularly useful as it's completely washable.
Dunlicane is very similar to Rotacane and we have so far come across one colour -
a very pleasant cool white - and one thickness, approximately 1.87mm - though there may
be others.

Flat seagrass needle 8" long - for seagrass or cotton cord.
These are certainly the best needles for seagrass and cord work but they do cost
quite a bit more than the curved ones. We can order them in for you if you wish.
N.B.If you are planning to use the thicker seagrass, these are the only needles
with big enough eyes to take the material.

PARCELS
Heavy parcels are normally sent by Parcelforce, but see below.
N.B. Postage rates are liable to change
without warning. Please check with us before working out postage. We try to keep
details on this site as up-to-date as possible, but it's always sensible to check
first.
Remember that if you're ordering
one
kilo of something, it will weigh more than a
kilo once it's wrapped up ready for posting!
The Post Office will now not accept
parcels longer than 2.5 metres, which means that
some of our bundles of rushes etc may be too long. If this happens we will use a courier to
deliver your order, but as the cost may be more, please contact us first if you're ordering
something that may be rather long.
INSURANCE Parcels have been known,
very occasionally, to vanish or get damaged en route. We always insure parcels whose
value is more than £36.
Please add insurance to your total, as follows:
Order value greater than £36.00 and less than £100 you should
please add an extra £1.00
If the value is greater than
£100, and less than £250 please add £2.25
Greater than £500 please add £3.50.

WORKING OUT THE POSTAGE
To work out how much to pay for postage and packing, either, (a) phone us on
01900 813200, or (b) email us

(c) work out roughly how heavy you think the parcel will be and make out your
cheque leaving the amount blank, but across the bottom write: 'NOT TO EXCEED
£________'. We can then fill in the correct amount.
N.B.,We can't always give you the exact postage instantly over the phone - the parcel may
have to be made up and weighed first!
